stormy sky
One of the things I rant about the most is also the thing I shouldn’t be ranting about at all: weather conditions. But, seriously, why can’t it be Spring yet? Why does it have to snow? I been waiting patiently for that wonderful time of year when weather is lovely and warm (but not too hot) and sunny but Winter seems to be taking over Croatia once again. Oh, well. Here are more pictures I took in Zagreb last week, on a crazy weather day (first it was sunny, then it got really cold and windy, it rained , then sunshine came peeking in through clouds again- for a moment I thought it was April.)

All of the photos were taken with Minolta XG-M and scanned from the negatives, as usual.

hotel

Earlier this week I went for a walk accompanied by my favorite toy camera (Ultra Wide and Slim) and trusty Minolta X-GM to capture some interesting bits and pieces of the city of Zagreb.

I’m always drawn to pretty typography.

abandoned house

I feel endlessly fascinated with things people choose to display in their windows, which pieces of their homes, their private spaces they choose to show to the outside world. I guess that fascinates me in the same way I’m interested in which parts of themselves , which persona people choose to put on while interacting with others. I’m even more curious about objects people leave behind whey they move out, when they abandon their place. I think that’s why this little house left in a window of an empty (seemingly decaying) apartment caught my attention. There is something symbolic about it (whether people who left it there are aware of it or not) and it makes me wonder and make up various stories in my mind.

boat

Lovely little boat in an old window, there must be some symbolism in that too :)

pharmacy

I really like old pharmacy scales, I’d love to have a pair.

stop and smell the film

There are times in life when you just have to stop and smell the film.

books

Books, books, books!

angry croat

Creepy little  mannequin (with cool eyebrows though) contemplating something. What could it be?  Big bang theory? Alternative histories of the planet Earth? Neo-liberal dogma expressed in post-modernistic contemporary art? We will never know.

grid

Seems that everyone’s a part of some grid and this lady taking a picture of her reflection  is no exception.

number one

The truth may be, I just love taking boring pictures, so here’s a boring picture of one window, next to number one.

Here’s another truth: today is Friday (yay! ) and I wish you all wonderful, warm, sunny, amazing weekend :)

I updated photos section of this site today by adding a small selection of photos I took in Zagreb from 2010 to 2012! You’ve probably seen most of these picture either here or on my old tumblr  but click here if you want to refresh your memory. It wasn’t easy to pick out just a few photos among thousands I took during 2 years but I focused mostly on colorful or  textured pictures (and I also added a few I’m sentimentally attached to). Also, I really wanted to avoid adding typical, touristy, cliche images of Zagreb (even though I took a fair share of them.) so this is more my own, personal, unique vision of the city rather than a representation of its most familiar, recognizable places and features.
I still plan on documenting the city but from now on with film camera instead of with my trusty digital Canon, so I guess updating my site with a collection of these digital photos, in a way marks an end of a series :)

This is the last batch of Zagreb photos I’ll be posting here for now. All of these photos were taken in October and November but I haven’t had a chance to go through them until now. I spent this Fall taking a lot of long walks in Zagreb and documenting anything that caught my attention, but mostly architecture and details of architecture. I ended up taking thousands of photos of the city. I wasn’t really working on any art/photo project I simply enjoyed noticing world around me and shooting. For now I will take a short break from going on photo walks  (probably until Spring) and take this time to come up with some kind of a concept  for next series of photos of  Zagreb, instead of just having a camera glued to my face and euphorically documenting everything and anything (although that’s also a valid thing to do if you ask me hahah).

I believe that beauty can be found in everything, even in ordinary, mundane, seemingly dull places and objects, even in places we conventionally consider ugly, dirty, uninteresting, even in places we seldom bother to notice such as: old doors and windows, peeling paint, rotten wood, decaying walls, moldy nooks etc. If we choose to pay attention we can discover incredible beauty in every little thing that surrounds us, no matter how unappealing it may seem at first. That’s probably the main reason why I like photographing filthy walls, old, trashy doors and windows and other elements of urban architecture. It reminds me that beauty, harmony and order can be discovered in most unexpected places if only we choose to open our eyes and see it.

from the park
Last week I felt like going for a long walk somewhere in the city and I got an idea to visit Mirogoj, the most beautiful cemetery in Zagreb. I never been there (never had a need to,  luckily there were no funerals I needed to attend). It was beautiful sunny weather and just few days after All Saints Day so all the graves were still covered with candles and flowers.
At first I just wanted to see Herman Bolle’s arcades but we ended up spending  over an hour walking around the graveyard since Arlen as an ex-history student was pretty curious about  historical aspects of the place.

Mirogoj is indeed very beautiful,  I’m not surprised that many tourists visit it.

Let me share a few of my photos with you:
